In 1980’s, Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is developed by Central computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA), it was the time when the UK was struggling with Challenges in IT Department. In the initial version there was a lots of books which Covers the particular practices within ITSM.
ITIL Version 1 turns to more than 30 volumes in 1986-1996, that was the time when this version is used by many of the IT companies. Due to very technical in nature, this version got upgraded in to next version i.e ITIL Version 2, in 2001. This version is much more accessible and focused as compared to the previous one. This new version of ITIL is a now a combination of 9 Management Sets. Out of them 2 Service management Sets were used more commonly across IT Sector. ITIL Version 2 Glossary were come in to picture in 2006.
Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency was combined with Office of Government Commerce (OGC) in the same year when ITIL Version 2 was launched. In 2007, this organization launched the next version of ITIL called ITIL Version 3(V3) or ITIL 2007 Edition or ITIL Refresh Project.
Now V3 reduced from 9 Volumes to 5 Volumes and specifies the concept of Service Lifestyle. These were named as:-
Then in 2009, all the previous version was removed after order by Government Commerce. An upgraded version of 2007 Edition was published in 2011. This was the last version which was revised.

The ITIL certificates do not expire. However, there are different versions of ITIL v3 2011 being the latest version. Once a new version of the course is launched, you will need to get certified again.
